Tierrechtler fordern mehr Tierschutz in der EU

Die neu gewählten EU-Parlamentarier sollen sich für eine Forschung ohne Tierversuche und eine humane und moderne Wissenschaft einsetzen. Das fordert der Bundesverband Menschen für Tierrechte im Verbund mit der Europäischen Koalition zur Beendigung von Tierversuchen (ECEAE) anlässlich der heutigen konstituierenden Sitzung des EU-Parlaments.

Chris Mullin MP, joins BUAV in call to end monkey trade cruelty

The BUAV, with the support of Chris Mullin MP for Sunderland South and Chair of the All Party Cambodia Group, visited the Foreign Office to call on the British government to express its concerns to the government of Cambodia regarding the unacceptable cruelty and suffering that are being inflicted on the country’s indigenous population of long-tailed macaques, concerns regarding the conservation status of this species and issues surrounding the implementation of the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) regulations.

BUAV joins animal groups to oppose plans for primate research facility in Malaysia

The BUAV has joined with animal protection groups from within Malaysia and around the world to protest against a proposal to build a primate testing facility in the country.

Reports that Malaysia is in discussions with a number of animal testing companies, including an unnamed French company to set up a facility using long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) imported from nearby countries, has raised concerns that European research companies, in an effort to avoid the growing public criticism of animal experimentation and attempts to impose tighter restrictions on the use of primates within the EU, may be looking to set up primate facilities in countries where regulations are more lax. This appears to be the case in Malaysia, where there is reportedly no legislation governing the use of animals in research. The use of non-human primates in research is being questioned internationally most recently in the European Union, by scientists as well as others.

The establishment of a primate facility in Malaysia would encourage further use of these animals at a time when this very practice is being challenged.

The campaign is receiving international media attention.

The EU must think again on animal research

ECEAE letter published in European Voice

The European Coalition to End Animal Experiments (ECEAE) along with numerous other animal protection, medical research and patient safety organisations representing millions of supporters in Europe and further afield recently submitted a formal complaint about the inquiry set up by the European Commission into non-human primate (NHP) research and humane alternatives to it.

Norway - Laboratory mice toes to be cut to identify them for research purposes

Forskere vil klippe tær av mus

Genforskere vil merke mus ved at ytterste tåledd kuttes av.

Når en bedriver genforskning ved hjelp av dyreforsøk, er det viktig at musene er nøyaktig merket slik at de ikke blandes. Forskere ved Norsk Transgen Senter ønsker å innføre en ny metode for merking som innebærer å klippe tærne av små mus.

- Det er veldig viktig at vi er sikre på at vi har med rett mus å gjøre. Og ved å merke dem ved å klippe ytterste ledd av tærne, er en helt sikker, sier daglig leder Mikael Vestberg ved Norsk Transgen Senter.

ECEAE calls for end to primates research

The European Coalition to End Animal Experiments held its biannual meeting in Croatia in March 2008. Members organised a well-supported End Primates Experiments demo in one of the main squares of Zagreb, calling on the EU to ban tests on primates. Although Croatia is not yet part of the EU, the country has a progressive Animal Protection Act (2006) banning the testing of animals on cosmetics and household products and their ingredients.

ECEAE end primate experiments demonstration

On 27th June the ECEAE held a demonstration on the steps of the European Parliament in Brussels to call for an end to primate experiments to be included in the revision to Directive 86/609.

The ECEAE also demonstrated outside the nearby offices of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), an international company that uses hundreds of monkeys in experiments.
